Why this layout

Forty guests is the size where a single head table still works: everyone in the wedding party sits together and nobody is more than two tables from it. The four rounds of eight sit in a loose arc rather than a grid, so guests at the back aren't looking at the back of someone's head, and the dance floor stays at the front where the music is rather than being boxed in by tables.
