Every desk layout buys you one thing and costs you another

Five arrangements cover almost every classroom. Pick by what the lesson needs, not by what looks tidy on paper.

Rows

Every student faces the board and you get the shortest walking route to any desk. It is the weakest layout for discussion and the strongest for a test.

Pairs

Two desks pushed together halves the number of aisles you need and gives every student one partner to check work with. It is the layout that fits 30 desks in a room that will not take pods.

Groups or pods

Four to six desks in a cluster, so group work no longer means moving furniture. About a third of the class ends up with their back to the board, so anything you project has to be repeated.

U-shape or horseshoe

One open ring facing in. Everyone can see everyone, which is why it suits seminars, discussion and language classes. It uses floor space quickly, and past roughly 25 students it stops fitting a standard room.

Double horseshoe

A second ring behind the first. This is how a U-shaped room survives a class of 28 or 30. The back ring loses eye contact with the far side, so treat it as rows with a better view.

Class size narrows the layout before anything else does

The same room takes a different arrangement at 20 students than at 30. These are the practical limits in a standard classroom.

20 students

Twenty desks fit any of these layouts, including a single horseshoe with room to walk behind it. This is the one class size where the arrangement is a free choice rather than a compromise.

25 students

Twenty-five is where the single U stops fitting most rooms. Pairs in five rows of five, or five pods of five, both leave aisles you can actually walk down.

30 students

Thirty desks in a standard room means rows or pairs. Pods still fit if you accept narrow aisles and give up a back corner. Start from the 30-student template rather than placing every desk yourself.

What this does not do

SeatPlanning draws a 2D floor plan that you arrange yourself. There is no 3D view, no photorealistic render, and nothing that produces a layout for you. You place the desks.

  • No one-click random shuffle. If reshuffling seats every lesson is the whole job, a purpose-built randomiser will do it in one click and this will not.

  • No roster or gradebook sync. You type or paste student names; nothing pulls them from your school system.

  • No behaviour, attendance or grade tracking. The chart is a chart.

The classroom template opens with thirty seats already placed. Move whatever does not match your room and rename the rest.

How do I arrange a classroom for 30 students?

Rows or pairs are the two arrangements that reliably fit thirty desks in a standard room. Pairs are usually the better trade: you need half as many aisles, and every student has a partner to check work with. If you want pods at thirty, plan on five clusters of six and accept narrow aisles. The 30-student template starts you with the desks already placed.

What is a good desk arrangement for 25 students?

Twenty-five is the point where a single horseshoe stops fitting most rooms. Five rows of five in pairs works in almost any space. Five pods of five works if the room is square rather than long, and keeps group work from needing furniture moved.

How do you seat 20 students in a small classroom?

Twenty desks will take any layout, so choose by lesson rather than by fit. A single horseshoe still leaves room to walk behind the ring, which makes it the best size for discussion-heavy classes. In a genuinely small room, pairs against two walls free the centre for you to move through.

Which classroom seating arrangement is best for group work?

Pods of four to six. Group work then costs nothing in setup time, which is the whole point. The cost is that roughly a third of the class sits with their back to the board, so plan to repeat anything you project or write.

Is a U-shape or horseshoe layout worth the floor space?

Up to about 25 students, yes. Everyone can see everyone, which changes how discussion runs. Beyond that the U has to double into a second ring, the back row loses eye contact with the far side, and you have paid the floor-space cost without keeping the benefit.

Can I print the seating chart or hand it to a substitute?

Yes. Export the chart as a PDF and print it, or share it as a link. A substitute gets the names in the seats without needing an account.

Is the classroom seating chart maker free?

Yes, and signing up is optional. A chart holds five tables of up to eight seats β€” 40 students β€” whether or not you have an account, because signing up buys seats and cloud saving, not more tables. That fits a class of 30 seated in rows or pods of six. It does not fit 30 separate single-desk tables; that needs a paid plan.

Can I generate a random seating chart with this?

No. SeatPlanning does not shuffle students into seats for you: you drag each name where you want it. That is deliberate, because most seating decisions in a classroom are not random. If a random shuffle is what you need, use a tool built for it.
